September Demonstration
Turning Fine Jewelry on the Wood Lathe
Brian Greb

Brian Greb

This month’s meeting will feature our very own Brian Greb, who will be demonstrating how you can easily turn fine jewelry fashions like earrings, bangle bracelets and necklace pendants. Brian’s demo will focus on the tools and techniques needed to create fine jewelry on your lathe.

Turned wooden jewelry

For his first project, Brian will demonstrate how to prepare and turn an Eccentric Necklace Pendant using common lathe tools and a Joyner Pendant chuck. This is a simple project for any turner and is a great introduction into the fascinating world of eccentric turning. Brian’s pendant can be finished in less than a half an hour and would make a great gift for friends or family. It could also be a profitable item for your booth at craft shows.

Brian’s second project will feature a Bangle Bracelet (Bobble for the British). This bracelet is a super easy project that can take as little as a half an hour to complete, or longer if you decide to embellish the wood turned surface. Brian’s third project will cover a "Light Pull" style Earring set or Pendant. Brian will touch on the techniques needed to turn these earrings, but they are simple spindle turnings for most any turner. It is the assembly and crafting of the metal parts of the earring that’s the real challenge.

If you’ve ever been interested in turning jewelry on your lathe, you don’t want to miss this demo. Turning jewelry is yet another way to creatively use your lathe as you continue to expand your artistic and technical skills. Turning jewelry is also a great way to use up all of those small bits and pieces of figured woods that you have been collecting in your studio over the years.

Invite your woodturning friends: Please invite any of your woodturning friends who you think may be interested in joining our club. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me (Steve) at 713-826-0046 Cell. I will look forward to seeing you all at Woodcraft. Take care and best wishes to you and yours!
