This very special demonstration and discussion will showcase our first husband and wife demonstration team and will cover getting started with hand and power carving tools. Gary Barnes is well known for his superb hand carved characters and wood spirits. Gary will demonstrate various hand carving tools and will give recommendations on what types of tools you need to begin hand carving on your woodturnings.
Wanda Barnes is an accomplished power carver and she will cover getting started with reciprocal and rotary power carving tools. Wanda will also give recommendations on the best types of power tools to use to fully explore power carving on your woodturnings. Proper selection and use of various types of power tool cutters and carving stones will be also be covered.
Gary and Wanda have offered to let anyone come up after the discussion and try out any of their hand or power carving tools. This will be a most enjoyable discussion and demonstration for any skill level turner. If you’ve ever thought about getting into carving, this is your chance to get some hands-on time with various hand and power carving tools and to ask any questions you have about carving on wood.
Carving embellishments on woodturnings are one of the hottest areas of interest in woodturning today. This demonstration and hands-on opportunity is a great way for you to learn what types of tools you will need to begin carving on your woodturnings, as well as get some practical experience using the actual tools used in the demo. If you want to take your woodturning up to the next level, you don’t want to miss this demo!
Remember to bring some of your recent projects: Be sure to bring some of your recent turned projects for our Show and Tell, or Show and Ask session. This can be a completed turning, or one that you are still working on. During our Show and Tell, you will have the opportunity to show your turning to the group and tell us a little about how you turned it, what finish you used and if you encountered any challenges when turning, sanding, or finishing the piece.
Everyone in the club is interested in what you've been doing at the lathe. If you need help with a project you're working on, bring it and let's discuss it during the Show and Ask session. There is a lot of experience in the club and everyone is always happy to help.
Invite your woodturning friends: Please invite any of your woodturning friends who you think may be interested in joining our club. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me (Steve) at 713-826-0046 cell. I'm looking forward to seeing you all at Woodcraft. Take care and best wishes to you and yours!
