This month's demonstration will feature Barry Walter, who will be sharing his knowledge of how to select, cut, drill and turn antler for various projects. He will also share his finishing methods and what to do when encountering porous areas, or other problems when turning antler.
Barry has made and sold about 200 pens from antler, mostly cigar style pens. He does not advertise any of his antler pens, all of his sales are from word of mouth, except the time he sat in the LSWA booth at the Panther Creek craft fair. He has sold antler pens in Texas, Utah, Wyoming, Pennsylvania, Colorado and North Dakota, as well as outside the U.S.
His step-son took a pen Barry gave him to Brazil and next thing Barry knew, he got an order from Brazil for 30 pens. Then one of the people from Brazil went to Colombia on business and he got an order for 25 pens, then Romania for another 15 pens, then Germany for 10 more pens. They were all Ultra Cigar pens, with engraved names and a wooden pen case.
Most of the antlers Barry uses come from Texas, but he did get a few from one of his customers in Wyoming. The interesting thing is that the Wyoming deer antler looked different when he started turning them. They had a lot of dark blue and even black on the inside, while the Texas antlers are gray with yellow and some blue. Near the center, it may be brown. If you’re looking to step up your pen turning a notch or two, you don’t want to miss this informative demonstration by Barry!
