June Mini-Retreat DetailsBowl Gouge Instructors: Brian Greb, Chuck Johnson, Larry Zarra Easy Rougher/Finisher Instructor: Pete Allen Sharpening Station/Roving Instructors: Steve Russell, Dennis Tholen Carving Instructor: Gary Barnes We will be hosting our first Mini-Retreat on Bowl Turning and Hand Carving this month at Woodcraft! This is your chance to get hands-on training in the techniques of bowl turning and an introduction to hand carving. Woodcraft recently replaced their mini lathes with new mini-lathe models, which we will be using during our bowl turning classes. Note: You may sign up for both the bowl turning and hand carving classes if you desire, just let me know in your email. We will have four (4) mini-lathe stations set up during the retreat. Each lathe station will have three (3) 90-minute rotations. This setup will accommodate 12 students for the hands-on bowl turning slots. Each lathe will have a personal instructor, so everyone will receive one-on-one instruction during their rotation. Woodcraft will provide the lathes, chucks, bowl gouges and turning tools and a dry grinder for sharpening, set up with the Wolverine sharpening jig. The club will provide bowl blanks for members who sign up prior to the event for use during the educational classes. The bowl turning classes will concentrate on mounting the blank on the lathe, preparing the spigot for mounting in the chuck, turning the back of the bowl, turning the interior of the bowl and reverse turning the foot of the bowl, as well as general techniques for using a bowl gouge, or the Easy Rougher/Finisher to turn a bowl. You need to bring a face shield! Also, a dust mask, if you would like to wear one whilst turning your bowl. We will not be sanding the bowls (due to the size of the room), all surface finishing will be done with a bowl gouge/scrapers. Note: The techniques of power sanding will be covered in a future meeting where adequate dust collection will be available. We have a total of 12 slots available at the lathe for bowl turning. If you are interested in learning how to turn a bowl at the retreat, please email me ASAP. The 12 slots will be awarded on a First-Come, First-Served basis. Please do not ask for a specific time slot, slots will be awarded to fill rotations in their respective order. When responding, please indicate if you are interested in a bowl gouge class, or if you prefer to learn how to use the Easy Rougher/Finisher. Once the rotations are filled, I will send an email to everyone to let them know their time slot and rotation number. Gary Barnes will be leading our hands-on Hand Carving Workshop. He will be showing you the basic techniques and tools necessary for hand carving. Gary can accommodate four (4) students at a time. We will set this up just like the bowl turning classes, on a First-Come, First-Serve basis. There will be three (3) 90-minute rotations in the hand carving workshop, each rotation will accommodate four students. This will allow up to 12 members the opportunity to participate in the carving workshop. Gary will be providing the carving blanks and all of the tools you will need to participate in the workshop. If you are interested in participating in the carving class, please email me ASAP. Once the rotations are filled, I will send an email to everyone to let them know their time slot and rotation number.
