Curtis Turner, Guest Demonstrator
Our May will feature a very special guest demonstrator Curtis Turner (Curtis Turner Studio) of the Central Texas Woodturners Association (CTWA). Curtis lives in Round Rock Texas and is the President elect of the CTWA. Curtis will be covering three different subjects in his in-depth demonstration/discussion. These include:
- Turning sculptural spindle work using gouges and skews. Curtis will texture a piece on the lathe using various non-traditional turning tools such a needle scaler, drawknife and floats. He will also demonstrate two-part patinas to achieve an old iron or copper look. If you have never worked with patinas before, you will see how easily this technique can be used for creating interesting effects on your turned boxes and bowls.
- Curtis will also have an open forum discussion about working with state forestry departments and how the LSWA might be able to obtain turning wood from this valuable resource.
- The final portion of his demo will include a brief overview of hand planes as they relate to “flat work”. This will include proper setup, planing techniques, and sharpening.
Remember to bring some of your recent projects: Be sure to bring some of your recent turned projects for our Show and Tell, or Show and Ask session. This can be a completed turning, or one that you are still working on. During our Show and Tell, you will have the opportunity to show your turning to the group and tell us a little about how you turned it, what finish you used and if you encountered any challenges when turning, sanding, or finishing the piece.
Everyone in the club is interested in what you've been doing at the lathe. If you need help with a project you're working on, bring it and let's discuss it during the Show and Ask session. There is a lot of experience in the club and everyone is always happy to help.
Invite your woodturning friends: Please invite any of your woodturning friends who you think may be interested in joining our club. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me (Steve) at 713-826-0046 Cell. I'm looking forward to seeing you all at Pete's studio. Take care and best wishes to you and yours!
