This meeting will be our second annual hands-on mini-retreat. This year we will be turning a mallet for your woodturning workshop. This is a great project for you to practice your spindle turning skills! In addition, you will walk away with a useful tool to keep by your lathe.
The cost to attend this event is only $10.00 per person. This helps to cover the cost of the Hard Maple project blank (3.5” x 3.5” x 12” long) and also includes pizza and sodas for lunch. Please bring correct change with you, as we will be collecting your $10.00 at the door.
Note: Please bring 1) a face shield and 2) any tools that you wish to use to complete your project. There will be a limited number of turning tools at the event (Woodcraft’s), but you should bring a few of your tools to make certain you have what you need. Please mark your name on each tool (tape and a black marker work well) that you bring.
We will not be doing any sanding this year… You will turn your project to completion at the event; if you want to sand it you can take it home and complete any sanding. Since this mallet will be banged around in your studio, there is really no need to sand it. The surface off the tool should be sufficient.
This will be a great project for you to practice beads, coves and use of a skew chisel, roughing gouge, or spindle gouge. Mastering these types of woodturning tools will help you to gain confidence in using other tools on the lathe.
There will be several experienced instructors at the retreat (Pete Allen, Dennis Tholen, Bill Goff, Brian Greb) to help you as you are turning your mallet. I will also be floating from lathe to lathe as needed and manning one of the sharpening stations.
Hands-on Carving Area: Gary Barnes will once again be running a hands-on carving area during our mini-retreat. This was a very popular area at last year's event. Students will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. There will be numerous opportunities throughout the day for you to participate in this popular carving workshop.
This month’s meeting will not feature our normal meeting agenda due to the retreat, please see this month’s agenda for details. Note: Please hold your Show and Tell turnings until next month.
