Welcome to all of our new club members and guests! Our May 23rd, 2015 club meeting will be held at the Woodcraft Store located at 60 FM 1960 West, Houston, TX 77090 Phone: 281-880-0045 starting promptly at 9:00 a.m.
The May Meeting will feature Gary Barnes demonstrating the Beall Treen Mandrel. Gary will show how the mandrel is used to turn small boxes or bottles, with minimum effort and maximum precision. The use of the mandrel allows the box wall to be turned quite thin if desired.
A bushing is provided to make sizing the lid easier. Also, a separate piece is turned for the disc that fits in the opening of the box. That way, if the disc is turned too small, it is just thrown away and a new one turned. Since the lid itself is a separate piece, this avoids the risk of ruining the lid.
Gary turns a variety of items including bowls,
ornaments, pens, canes and hollow vessels. He also carves, wood burns and
paints. Additional examples of Gary's turned boxes are shown below.
