Lone Star Woodturners Association, Inc.

Steven D. RussellPresident, Treasurer & Webmaster

Steve opened Eurowood Werks Studio more than thirteen years ago. His professional woodturning studio specializes in the production of bowls, platters and hollow forms. The majority of Steve's current artistic work centers on the exploration of fifth century Grecian water and wine vessels. Particular attention is paid to the visual and tactile details in his pieces, striving for a graceful harmonious balance in the finished form.

I have always wondered what a wood working Studio was. I know what a Shop is --- so about one year ago I started taking classes from Steve Russell (LSWA President). Now I know what the difference is and it is more than just a physical term. It is rather a collaboration of artists that express themselves with a Lathe and a sense of community.

I still enjoy revving up the ole table saw, but would rather be making chips. I am semi-retired having to work as a consultant to the packaging / manufacturing company that I founded in the late eighties. I have 7 grand children and a very understanding wife who is always excited to see a new project take shape on the lathe (she knows to humor me!).

As the saying goes, a mighty oak grows from a simple acorn. My seed was planted when I built my first pinewood derby racer for Boy Scouts. It created a fascination with making objects from wood. High school Woodworking classes continued to stimulate that curiosity. Throught the years, that interest has culminated in a rewarding hobby of designing and building furniture.

As I look by at my past work, it strikes me that I have always experimented with designs using contrasting wood color and wood grain combinations, given my prior woodworking experiences and my ownership of the necessary tools, it was only natural that I gravitated towards turning.

One thing I have found, is that unlike many artists, Woodturners are unique, in that they have a willingness to share their ideas and techniques. These talented artists have provided me with the inspiration to create many projects that has resulted in a truly gratifying experience.
